Mac Mini/NES Mod

Friday, March 3, 2006

This is an impressive mod, especially if you’re a gamer like myslef. Brent Housen’s friend has taken a Mac mini, gutted it, and reassembled it inside an NES. The power button on the NES puts the Mac mini to sleep, and the Reset button ejects the CD tray. Pretty damn sweet. I just hope you don’t have to blow on the CD’s repeatedly to get them to work.

Apple order status widget

Friday, March 3, 2006

We’ve all been there. You order something from the Apple Store, and then you compulsively check Apple’s status page to see where your order is. Finally, your Mac is shipped and now, you compulsively check FedEx to see where the heck your Mac is (’On the truck?! Why the heck has it been on the truck for 2 days?!’).

Mike Pointek has whipped up the Apple Order Status widget to help with the first part of this Mac ritual. Instead of visiting Apple’s website, you can just pop into the Dashboard for an hourly (you can choose the update interval) status report.

MacBook Pro: The Ultimate HD portable?

Friday, March 3, 2006

HD Beat has taken a nice look at the MacBook Pro as a portable HD machine (the “ultimate,” as they call it). Ben Drawbauch sings the machines praises:

“It can decode two HD videos at once and watch them in Expose, but not without dropping a few frames…The most impressive thing is how well it plays H.264 HD encoded material, the CPU never goes over 60% and is usualy closer to 50% and scrubs perfect.”

Maybe 2006 is the “year of HD,” not 2005 as most people originally thought. Check out the rest of the post, it’s definitely a good read.

Red Hat to bring Linux to Intel Macs

Thursday, February 23, 2006

Efforts to boot Windows on Intel-based Macs have so far proven fruitless, but that doesn’t mean the new boxes won’t be able to run multiple OSes. And if the folks at Red Hat have their way, Linux may be running on your iMac and MacBook Pro long before Vista ever does.

The company has announced plans to support the new computers, and will work to develop a boot loader that will work with the Extensible Firmware Interface, which fills in for a BIOS on the Intel Macs. However, Red Hat admits they don’t yet have any Intel Macs in house, so it might take them a while to actually get going on this (though we have faith that someone in the open source community is already working on this very issue).

Oh, and if you think you can get Windows working on a MacTel box, you may be able to collect a bounty; one enterprising fellow has launched a site where he’s soliciting donations for a reward to be paid to the first person to dual boot Windows and OS X on an Intel Mac. As of the time of this entry, he’s collected just over $12,000.
